What Can and Can't Go in a Rental Dumpster in New Jersey

Every dumpster rental comes with a quiet list of rules, and most companies only mention them after something banned shows up in the load. Here is the list up front, so nothing on your driveway becomes a problem at the landfill.

What can go in

The short version: normal household and project debris is fine. That covers:

  • Furniture, mattresses, and household junk
  • Clothing, toys, boxes, and general cleanout contents
  • Drywall, flooring, cabinets, and remodel debris
  • Wood, fencing, and deck boards
  • Shingles and roofing tear-off material
  • Brush, branches, and yard waste

If you are doing a home cleanout, a yard project, or a remodel, close to everything you are throwing out is on that list.

What cannot go in

The prohibited items are the ones landfills refuse or regulate. No hauler in New Jersey can legally take these in a standard dumpster:

  • Paint, stains, solvents, and household chemicals
  • Motor oil, gasoline, and automotive fluids
  • Car batteries and propane tanks
  • Tires
  • Asbestos and anything suspected of containing it

Most of these have a legitimate disposal path through your county. Gloucester County, for example, runs household hazardous waste collection events where paint and chemicals go free of charge. A quick search for your county's solid waste page will show the next date.

The gray areas people ask about

  • Appliances. Standard appliances are usually fine. Anything with refrigerant, like a fridge or air conditioner, needs special handling. Ask us first and we will tell you the plan.
  • Concrete, brick, and dirt. This is a weight problem, not a rules problem. Dense material blows past a weight allowance in a few wheelbarrow loads. Our dumpsters are built for household and project debris, so tell us up front if your job is mostly masonry or soil and we will be honest about whether we are the right fit.
  • Electronics. New Jersey bans TVs and computers from landfills. Most towns run e-waste dropoffs that take them free.

The rule of thumb

If it came out of a room, a garage, an attic, or a yard, it can almost certainly go in. If it can burn, leak, or power something, it almost certainly cannot.
